Tips for having a responsive web design

A responsive web design lets the user enjoy an optimised browsing experience regardless of the device they’re using to view your website. Brands with responsive web designs have improved rankings on SERPs and have an easier time managing their website. Since a responsive web design is far more fluid, it will be easier for brands to adapt to changes in new devices that may have different screen sizes in the future.

If you want your site to have a responsive web design, here are some tips to remember:

Think mobile

Over 50% of Google searches are done on mobile devices, so it is reasonable to mold your design ideas around being mobile-friendly. Design your site to fit in the smallest screen possible then work your way up to desktop.

When designing on mobile, less is often more since you’re working with a limited amount of space. Be concise in what you have to say and tailor your content so that the user can clearly understand what the site is about.

Similarly, ensure that the call-to-action (CTA) buttons can be easily seen and tapped. You should also arrange the information presented according to importance. If the key goal is for the user to download a form, don’t put it in the bottom of the page.

Use flexible images

Using photos is extremely important in making websites as the visual appeal is a great way to draw users in. Make sure the images you use can be scaled; think about how they will look both on mobile and on desktop. When developing the site, the code will let the images scale through percentage value to the width of the browser window.

Try using Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) for simple images. They make for clear images that can be scaled up or down without losing the clarity, sharpness and quality on the site. For more detailed images, PNGs are recommended.

Easy navigation

Navigating your site should come instinctively to your user; that is, they shouldn’t have to think about it when scrolling through your site. A good responsive web design leads the user to where they want to go.

Common navigation methods for mobile-friendly websites include the classic hamburger-style menu, the dropdown selection and the expand/collapse fields. The key here is to ensure that the user could quickly and smoothly explore your site.
